Wrexham 'won't be the biggest fish in the pond' in League One next season following their promotion as their executive director identified the big hitters which could yet - although, clearly, hopefully not - include Birmingham City and who will pose a challenge to the Red Dragons' season-on-season momentum they've generated.

Wrexham have won successive promotions under Hollywood co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, from the National League to League One, having recruited the likes of Steven Fletcher, James McClean and Jack Marriott in order to aid their quest to reach the upper echelons of English football once more.

They'll be in League One with Stockport County, Mansfield Town and also Rotherham United, who have been relegated from the Championship. Huddersfield Town are also likely to join the Millers in the third tier this term, but Blues - despite finding themselves in the bottom three with a game to play - have a much more realistic chance of avoiding the drop.

They'll need to beat Norwich City on the final day, at St Andrew's, to stand a chance and hope that Plymouth, Sheffield Wednesday or Blackburn Rovers all suffer either defeats or don't win. Otherwise, they'll be returning to the third division for the first time since 1995 - on that occasion, their stay in the tier was limited to just a single season.

Humphrey Ker, who is Wrexham's executive director and who has played his part in the club's recent success, is well aware that things won't be getting any easier for the club the higher up the football pyramid they journey and acknowledges that there'll be some big clubs in League One next term who, in this moment, possess more firepower than they do.

"We've sort of bludgeoned our way out of the National League and League Two," Ker told talkSPORT. "We signed the best League One players who we could persuade to drop down to us. Phil has done an unbelievable job with that, because as we know there are a number of clubs who have spent a huge amount of money and not forged that team into a coherent unit on the pitch.

"We are about to get into an environment where we won't be the biggest fish in the pond. If Birmingham drop down...already there are clubs in League One who are as storied as us, who have larger stadiums than us and bigger fanbases than we do. Phase one of what we're trying to do is probably coming to a close now. Phase two is starting and we have got to be on our game.

"This season is going to be harder. We need to consolidate, we need to do an awful lot of work off the pitch because we need to have that basis. I'd be content if we finished tenth, because that would allow us to consolidate and build. Phil won't be content to do that, Elliott Lee, Paul Mullin...the players want to win and get to where they feel they belong.

"I agree that I think we have every chance of achieving something special again next year. I don't think we'll go up again, but we could get into the play-offs. You never know, and I will never discount it because we will do our best to strengthen this summer and see what happens."
