Paul Mullin is Wrexham's ninth-highest scorer of all time with 99 goals

Wrexham beat promotion rivals Mansfield Town to move within a point of top spot in League Two.

Paul Mullin swept Andy Cannon's cross beyond Christy Pym in the 32nd minute.

Aaron Lewis and James Gale came the closest to equalising for Mansfield - who saw Davis Keillor-Dunn have a goal disallowed for a foul on Arthur Okonkwo.

But Mullin rifled home from the penalty spot on 67 minutes to seal victory after Jordan Bowery fouled Luke Bolton.

Mullin's brace - which took the striker's goal tally to 20 for the season - lifts Phil Parkinson's side level with second-placed Mansfield on 73 points.

Stockport County lead the way on 74 points following a 3-0 triumph at Forest Green Rovers.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson:

"It was a hard-earned win, a gritty and determined performance. We restricted a very good Mansfield team to very little.

"All in all, the team work ethic today was outstanding. We had to dig deep in terms of concentraion levels as well as the physicality.

"We didn't get too down when we lost to Tranmere and we're not going to get too high after today. Now it's about preparation for what will be a terrific game at Doncaster on Tuesday."

    We save our worst performance of the season for today . Wrexham won at a canter and didn’t need help from the ref . We seem to have lost our mojo after being unbeatable most of season. Fair result and well played Wrexham and great respect to your owners for their charity donation. Up the Stags .

    Lovin Division 2 this year. It is a proper football title challenge. It needs more attention than the current premier league title race.

    You have to wonder how many goals Mullin would have scored at this stage had he not been injured at the start of the season. Great win for Wrexham, not so much for Mansfield, who have now picked up only four points from the last 12 on offer.

    Absolutely nothing is a given in L2. Wrexham squandered 5 points at home to Harrogate and Tranmere, when you'd have said that was a 6 points for sure. Mansfield losing some form. MK on a roll, so anyone of the top 6 ( Crewe outsiders). Just hope Wrexham are there, any top 3 spot will do.

    Not often I give Wrexham credit but that's a very good win today, Helps us out too by letting us grab top spot again. I suppose we did you a favour beating MK last week & now you've returned it with today's result. Who'd of thought it eh? Stockport & Wrexham helping each other out lol! Still think the current top 3 are going up but in which order who knows?

      Mate, at Mansfield’s March pace, they won’t even have top seed in the playoffs. Barrow have twice as many points over last 6 matches and only trail by 6 with a match in hand. Any of the top 3 stumble, and they could easily pass. What a season finale we have coming!
